BurnCam was one of the best projects I have worked on. Not only did l gain tremendous amount of design and product development experience, I also met amazing people. My team consisted of a fellow designer, six engineers, and an amazing project lead. Moreover, our clients were two Northeastern alumni that were passionate about the project. With good communication, support and team atmosphere we brought the project to life.
the challenge
BurnCam is an augmented telemedicine platform that uses AI and machine learning to diagnose burn injuries and connects patients with burn care experts any time, anywhere. It is using new technologies and exploring new territories. This meant it was difficult to inform design decisions from other applications on the market.
the goal
Another challenge is that BurnCam's app has to be extremely accessible. As a medical app intended to be used by all age groups, we cannot allow any ambiguity in our design. With less tech-savvy and older users, we approached the design with a clean and straightforward philosophy leaving nothing up to interpretation.
user testing
We conducted two rounds of user testing. The first one tested our interactive low fidelity prototype. Using Useberry, a task-setting tool, we invited anyone and everyone to test our designs. For our second round, we wanted quality over quantity. We were able to meet with 3 people in the medical field and observe them closely as they progressed through the Hi-fi prototypes. People found the prototypes to be straightforward and information easy to absorb. This aligned with what we set out to build and gave us confidence in our approach.
The brand
As much as I wanted to play with bold colors and exciting interactions, our goal was to put utility and accessibility at the forefront; and I had to respect that. Our client was a fan of purple and we found a perfect highlight color to bring out contrast. BurnCam needed to be clean and straightforward which puts an extra spotlight on the workflows and user experience.
My introduction to the product development pipeline was a good one. BurnCam has changed the way I look at design projects. It showed me the importance of good preparation. From a well-defined scope and goal to competitive research and user personas, everything forces you to critically think about your decisions. Is what I am doing contributing to the goal or is it fluff? When I find myself lost these will be the things to ground me and continue making good designs.
